The Blacks in Portraits Series
Celebrating History, One Portrait at a Time
What started as a personal project to create a portrait a day during a daily work commute has blossomed into a four-volume celebration of Black history and culture. The "Blacks in Portraits" series aims to inspire, educate, and share the remarkable stories of trailblazing figures who have contributed to America and the world in outstanding ways. Through vivid artwork and engaging storytelling, these books invite you to discover journeys of resilience, excellence, and innovation.
Volume 1: The Original Collection
Did you know that Betty Boop was actually based on Esther Jones, a Black jazz singer, and not Helen Kane? Or that the first man to reach the North Pole was African American?
This inaugural volume kicks off the series with the original collection of portraits created daily on a commute. It's packed with interesting, lesser-known facts about amazing Black figures from history.
Volume 2: Culture & Collaboration
Building on the success of the first book, this second volume is a month-long celebration of how African Americans have influenced our country.
This edition features a special collaboration with friend and designer Delvin Kariuki, utilizing fabulous fabrics from Kwamboka.com within the artwork. In a time where teaching accurate history is more essential than ever, Volume 2 continues the important work of reviving and celebrating these stories.
Volume 3: Visionaries & Trailblazers
This third installment continues to share the remarkable stories of visionary figures from the Black community whose contributions have shaped our world.
From activists and artists to scientists and entrepreneurs, each story offers a unique perspective on Black excellence and resilience. Let the journeys of these inspirational individuals spark a fire within you to continue learning and growing.
Volume 4: The Pride Edition
This special edition champions vigilant, loud, and proud figures from the Black LGBTQIA+ community.
Learn about powerful contributions in the arts, sciences, and activism from historic pioneers like James Baldwin to current voices like Chris Witherspoon. The book is sprinkled with "DID YOU KNOW" fun facts to expand your knowledge and challenge your friends.
Your thoughts and feedback contribute to the ongoing dialogue. After exploring these volumes, I invite you to share your opinion and suggestions.
