Matryoshka Doll
Russian Nesting Dolls, or Matryoshka dolls, have always held a special fascination for me. They are more than just wooden dolls placed inside one another; they are layers of stories, memories, and surprises. I purchased a set on a trip, driven by a wave of nostalgia for one my grandmother owned. That simple purchase sparked this series of drawings.
While inspired by the traditional form, these illustrations are my own imaginative interpretations. I enjoyed exploring different color palettes and patterns, from the classic strawberry motif on a black background to more whimsical floral designs. Each drawing was an opportunity to experiment with marker and ink, capturing the charm and folk-art feel of these beloved dolls.
For me, these dolls represent the layers within us all—the different versions of ourselves that we carry. Drawing them was a meditative process, a way to connect with a cherished childhood memory while creating something new and uniquely my own.
